A Time to Every Purpose
Jun 10, 2024I've been thinking of that folk song from the sixties – I’m not sure who sang it. Maybe, Peter, Paul and Mary? For some reason, I think every folk song from the sixties was by Peter, Paul and Mary, but it might have been the Pete Seeger (it was Pete Seeger, I just checked.)
To everything (turn, turn, turn)
There is a season (turn, turn, turn)
And a time to every purpose, under heaven
A time to be born, a time to die
A time to plant, a time to reap
A time to kill, a time to heal
A time to laugh, a time to weep…
Many of you will recognize those lyrics from another place: the Bible, Ecclesiastes chapter three. That song has been around a few thousand years, at least. The truths it displays are even older than that.
There is a time for everything in life. The seasons of life affect us all, always. When we are truly present with others during their significant times, when we share their joy, and their sorrow, everyone involved is transformed. It’s not always easy, but it is always powerful.
